INSTAGRAM IMAGE SIZES

Instagram post size.

1080 × 1440 px at 3:4 is the tallest size Instagram keeps at original resolution, from a 320–1080 px width range at 1.91:1 to 3:4, checked on 2026-10-26 (UTC). At 1080 px wide, that range is 566 to 1440 px high. This is an independent tool, not affiliated with Instagram.

Instagram post sizes, checked against official pages

These values were printed by Instagram Help and Meta Business Help on 2026-10-26 (UTC). Organic post rules and ad rules are separate pages with different limits. “Not stated” means the linked official page did not publish that value in the text we read. No value below is copied from a third-party guide.

The organic photo page does not list a file-size ceiling or a file-type list in the text read. Meta’s feed image ad page lists 30 MB and JPG or PNG; that limit belongs to the ad scope and is not applied to ordinary posts. Instagram’s help text also says a photo with an unsupported aspect ratio is cropped to fit a supported one, a photo narrower than 320 px is enlarged to 320 px wide, and a photo wider than 1080 px is sized down to 1080 px wide.

Common claim vs the official text

Common claim: the maximum portrait post is 1080 × 1350 px at 4:5, or 3:4 describes only the grid preview. Official text: Instagram says a photo is kept at its original resolution when its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, “a width of 1080 pixels with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels”. The organic photo page does not name 1350 px or 4:5 as its maximum.

Meta’s ad guide is a separate scope: it recommends 1440 × 1800 px at 4:5 for feed image ads and gives an aspect-ratio range of 4:5 to 1.91:1 there. That recommendation does not replace the organic range above. The cropper on this page checks the organic range.

  • Choose an image to see the four checks.

The checks cover the encoded pixels, Instagram’s published organic ratio range, the 25 MiB limit stated on this page, and the JPG or PNG export. Instagram states no organic file-size ceiling in the text read, so the file-size line shows that fact as well as this tool’s own limit. These checks do not promise how Instagram will display the image.

Instagram post dimensions, without guessing

Instagram’s current help text gives a range, not one canvas. A photo stays at its original resolution when it is between 320 and 1080 px wide and its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. At 1080 px wide, the supported height is 566 to 1440 px. That makes 1080 × 1440 px the tallest size in the published range and 1080 × 566 px the widest.

If you searched for instagram post size or ig post size, the shape of the answer is the same: pick the ratio you want inside 1.91:1 to 3:4. The instagram post dimensions for a square are 1080 × 1080 px; a 4:5 portrait is 1080 × 1350 px; a 3:4 portrait is 1080 × 1440 px.

What happens above 1080 px wide

Instagram says a photo wider than 1080 px is sized down to a width of 1080 px. A 2× export therefore gives you a larger source file; it does not make Instagram keep more than 1080 px of width, and it cannot add detail that the source image did not contain.

This page does not know how Instagram compresses an upload, and it does not claim that a 2× file will look sharper after posting. It reports the pixels and bytes of the file this browser encoded.

How to use this Instagram post cropper

  1. Choose a JPG, PNG or WebP image from your device.
  2. Select a ratio: 3:4, 4:5, 1:1 or 1.91:1. Use Fill to crop to the canvas or Fit to keep the whole image with a background colour.
  3. Choose 1× or 2×, JPG or PNG, then inspect the preview and the four checks.
  4. Download or copy the encoded file. If the export passes the 25 MiB limit, the file is ready for your own upload test.

Every crop is made locally in this browser. No account is needed and no image is sent to ThumbGlance.

Questions

What is the Instagram post size?

Instagram keeps a photo at its original resolution from 320 to 1080 px wide when the aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. At 1080 px wide, the supported height is 566 to 1440 px. The tallest size is 1080 × 1440 px at 3:4.

Is 1080 × 1350 the maximum?

No. 1080 × 1350 px at 4:5 is inside Instagram’s organic range, but the organic photo page gives 3:4, or 1080 × 1440 px, as the tall end. Meta’s ad guide separately recommends 1440 × 1800 px at 4:5 for feed image ads.

Does 2× guarantee a sharper post?

No. It exports twice the selected width and height at the same ratio. Instagram says it sizes a photo down to 1080 px wide, and this tool cannot add source detail or predict Instagram’s compression.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. Decoding, cropping and encoding happen in this browser. The page does not upload or store your image.

Where do the numbers come from?

Each row links to an Instagram Help or Meta Business Help page read on 2026-10-26 UTC. Values a page did not state are marked Not stated rather than filled from another site.
