Instagram story size
Instagram Story size: 1080 × 1920 pixels (9:16) is the frame recommended by Meta's official Stories ads requirements, checked 2026-10-22 UTC; Instagram's organic Help pages reviewed that day do not state a pixel size.
The two organic Help Center pages reviewed here describe how to share a Story and how long a video clip can be. The explicit pixel, ratio, file-format and file-size values come from the separate ads page. This page keeps those scopes apart.
Official specs: organic posting and ads
Organic Story posting
On 2026-10-22 UTC, a signed-out en-US browser read Share a photo or video to your Instagram story at 14:12:51 UTC and Tips for uploading, recording and editing your Instagram story at 14:13:36 UTC. The pages say:
- “video up to 60 seconds long”
- “Longer videos will be broken up into multiple clips”
- “If you share a video longer than 60 seconds”
- “The video trimmer is currently only available on iOS devices.”
Neither organic page reviewed stated a pixel width or height, a 9:16 label, an accepted file list or a file-size ceiling. That is a limit of these two pages, not proof that no other Instagram page has the information.
Stories ads
Meta's Design requirements for Instagram Stories ads, checked at 14:13:59 UTC the same day, lists “1080 x 1920” as the recommended resolution, “600 x 1067” as the minimum and “9:16” as the recommended ratio. It also lists “.mp4 or .mov” for video, “4GB (Video)”, “30MB (Photo)”, “Maximum: 60 minutes” and says “images will show for 5 seconds by default.”
Those values are advertising requirements. They are not an organic Story upload specification and they are not a measurement of the organic Story player.
What the first ten results said
The source rows below follow a Google US English query for instagram story size with personalization off (pws=0), signed out. The first ten recorded results were read on 2026-10-22 UTC between 13:10 and 13:25; ads, videos and “People also ask” blocks were skipped. “Not stated” means that page did not print the value in its text, not that the underlying tool cannot do it.
During that read, linearity.io returned HTTP 500 twice. Row 10 is therefore a disclosed substitution: the Meta Business Help page for Stories ads replaces that failed result. It is not the original organic result.

The @topiasupply caption contained no numeric specifications; dimensions shown inside carousel images were not counted as page text. The Meta row is the documented substitution for linearity.io and retains its ads-only scope.
The safe zone: four answers, no source
The phrase instagram stories safe zone often appears in guides as though one fixed rectangle had been measured. The four pages below give different answers, and none of the pages we read supplies a source or its own measurement for the number.
- PostFast
- Keep 250 px at the top and 350 px at the bottom.
- Outfy
- Keep 250 px at both the top and the bottom.
- ShortGenius
- Keep 250 px at both the top and the bottom.
- Instasize
- Cites Meta's ads guidance as 14% at the top and 20% at the bottom, about 269 px and 384 px in a 1920 px-high frame; the same page also says the organic posting interface is not fixed.
Those are third-party claims, not measurements. The 14% and 20% arithmetic is 0.14 × 1920 = 268.8 and 0.20 × 1920 = 384. The Meta ads page checked for this article did not publish either percentage. In particular, an ads allowance cannot be reported as a measurement of where the organic Story avatar, account name or reply box sits.
We do not turn the four competing descriptions into a consensus number. The next section records what happened when we tried to measure the overlays ourselves.
What we could and could not measure
On 2026-10-22, two fresh signed-out Chrome views with navigator.language === "en-US" opened instagram.com/stories/instagram/?hl=en. At a verified 1280 × 800 CSS viewport, the page reached at 14:27:32 UTC showed “See this story before it disappears”, “Sign Up” and “Log in”. At a verified 375 × 812 CSS viewport, the page reached at 14:27:34 UTC showed the same login wall.
No Story frame was visible at either viewport, so there were zero overlay samples. The avatar, account name and reply box bounding boxes were not measured. We did not log in, handle CAPTCHA, substitute an ads preview or treat another Instagram surface as this Story.
Sample date: 2026-10-22 UTC. Sample: two signed-out login-wall results, one per viewport; overlay samples: zero. Not covered: the logged-in Story player, apps, other accounts, other locales, other devices, uploaded media or platform processing. Locale was recorded as en-US; US network egress was not independently verified.
Instagram story aspect ratio
The aspect ratio for instagram stories in the Meta ads row is 9:16 because 1080:1920 reduces to 9:16. For this page's working frame, width × 16 equals height × 9: 1080 × 16 = 17,280 and 1920 × 9 = 17,280.
Those instagram stories specs are exact for the recommended ads frame. The organic Help pages reviewed do not print a 9:16 label, so this page does not present 9:16 as an organic Help Center statement. It is the recommended ads ratio and the mathematical shape of the 1080 × 1920 frame.
A smaller 9:16 frame such as 720 × 1280 has the same shape and fewer pixels. A 1080 × 1920 export contains more pixels but does not establish a different visible safe area or avoid compression after upload.
Limits and source notes
The official evidence has two distinct scopes. The organic pages read on 2026-10-22 UTC state clip duration and splitting behavior. The Meta ads page, read at 14:13:59 UTC, supplies the explicit 1080 × 1920 recommendation, 600 × 1067 minimum, 9:16 ratio, formats, file ceilings and 5-second default ad-image display.
The ten-result table is a dated snapshot of page text, not a ranking of correctness. It records what each linked page said when read; row 10 is the disclosed replacement for a page that returned HTTP 500 twice. Some pages may have updated after this read.
The overlay section contains zero measurements because both approved signed-out attempts hit a login wall. The four numbers in the safe-zone section remain unsourced third-party claims. This article provides no universal organic overlay coordinate and no promise that a design will remain unobscured.

Questions
What size should an Instagram Story be?
Use 1080 × 1920 pixels at 9:16 as the working full-screen frame. The explicit pixel recommendation found in the official pages reviewed is labeled for Stories ads; the organic Help pages checked do not state a pixel size.
Does Instagram publish the same size for organic Stories?
The two organic Help pages reviewed did not. They described sharing and clip duration only. This page does not extend the ads specification beyond its label.
Is there an official safe-zone percentage?
No safe-zone percentage appeared on Meta's Stories ads page. The 14% and 20% figures were a third-party attribution to ads guidance in Instasize, while other pages gave 250–350 px values without a source.
Did ThumbGlance measure the avatar or reply box?
No. Both signed-out viewport attempts reached a login wall before a Story frame appeared, so no overlay bounding box was recorded.
Is 720 × 1280 still 9:16?
Yes. It has the same shape and fewer pixels than 1080 × 1920. The upload and display behavior of any particular Instagram surface is outside this source check.
