YouTube does not specify any font for thumbnails. The official guidance sets size, ratio and file rules for the image itself and names no typeface and no font requirement. What the previews show
The large canvas is a 1280 × 720 design with a dark preset background, white text and a black stroke. The small canvas is the same layout at a 320 × 180 search-result scale. Backgrounds, colors and stroke are our preset examples, not YouTube requirements. Export gives you the 1280 × 720 PNG only; font rendering depends on the fonts installed on your device.

Work out the text size
A common starting point is a title line height between 10% and 15% of the canvas height. The following values are our worked example, not an official requirement.
At 1280 × 720
720 × 10% = 72 px720 × 15% = 108 px
A one-line title between 72 and 108 px tall covers the common range at HD thumbnail size.
At 3840 × 2160
2160 × 10% = 216 px2160 × 15% = 324 px
The same percentages scale with the canvas: keep the proportion, not the pixel number.
Count your lines
Two lines at 15% each already use 30% of the height, leaving less margin than it seems.

Keeping total text height under roughly 40% of the canvas is our suggestion.
Check it small
Scale the design to 320 × 180 and read it once. If a letter needs guessing at that size, the font or size is doing the thumbnail no favors in our experience.
How to choose when everything looks fine
This part is our advice, not official guidance. At thumbnail size, thin strokes and tight letter spacing are the first things to disappear: hairline serifs and light weights lose contrast against busy backgrounds. Three to five words stay readable where a sentence will not, and mixed-case text usually survives small sizes better than long all-caps strings, which read as one block. If the title sits over a photo, add contrast with the stroke, a scrim, or a darker area of the image rather than a fancier font. When two candidates both pass the small-size check, pick the one that matches the video's tone; the preview cannot measure tone or audience response, and neither can any tool.
