YouTube thumbnail background

Put any image, solid color or gradient behind a sample title and see whether the title stays readable at two YouTube display widths we measured. Everything runs in your browser; your image is never uploaded.

Your background with the measured title · 1280 × 720, scaled to fit

This page’s rule: the actual glyph height is at least 12 px and the worst 10% contrast meets the WCAG threshold. Large bold text of 18.5 px or larger uses 3:1; otherwise 4.5:1. Readable means readable by this rule, not that YouTube will approve the thumbnail or that it predicts clicks.

Watch-page sidebar, 1280 px window: 215 px wide
Search results, computer: 500 px wide

The 215 px and 500 px CSS widths come from our October 10, 2026 measurement in the thumbnail ideas display-size table. That measurement used one computer once; YouTube can change its layouts, so your sizes can differ. The 12 px line comes from the same page’s duration-label benchmark, not a YouTube rule.

The download is the background only. The title, outline and measurement marks never enter the file. PNG pixels and bytes are read back from the encoded file. Only after a PNG is strictly greater than 2,000,000 bytes does Download JPG instead appear, at quality 0.9 and the same pixels; PNG is never automatically converted. To add a finished title, use the thumbnail maker or thumbnail template.

How it measures

The page renders your actual title on the 1280 × 720 background with your chosen font, color and outline. It reads the pixels under the rendered glyph and stroke, calculates WCAG contrast for those foreground/background pairs, and reports the worst 10% quantile and the median. The 10% quantile is not an average.

The 215 px and 500 px display widths and the 12 px benchmark come from the thumbnail ideas measurement. The contrast thresholds and relative luminance formula come from the W3C’s Understanding SC 1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum) page. The file-size line comes from YouTube Help’s Add a custom thumbnail page. WCAG and YouTube Help were checked October 17, 2026 (UTC); the display widths were measured October 10, 2026.

Choosing a background for YouTube thumbnail titles

A useful background for youtube thumbnail titles leaves room around the words. Fine texture and areas with the same lightness as the title can make a thumbnail background for youtube hard to read even when the colors look different at full size. Move the title, enlarge it or turn on the outline after you see the worst 10% reading.

Cool background for thumbnail, blue and black backgrounds

To try a cool background for thumbnail ideas, start with a solid color or a two-color gradient. A blue background for youtube thumbnail text can work with white or yellow; a black background for youtube thumbnail text can work with white. Measure the exact pair instead of relying on the color name.

Questions

Does my image leave my browser?

No. Decoding, drawing, measurement and export happen locally.

Is it free?

Yes. It runs in your browser without an account or payment.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail background be?

This tool exports 1280 × 720. For YouTube’s current recommendation and upload limits, see the size guide.

Is the rule YouTube’s?

No. The 12 px benchmark is our measured benchmark and the readability decision is this page’s rule. WCAG supplies the contrast formula and thresholds.

Does it predict clicks?

No. It checks text height and contrast by a stated rule; it does not predict clicks.
